When a new store of the largest Indian grocery marketplace open in the USA, does it create a buzz in the national headlines? Who cares! But when Patel Brothers open a new store in the USA, it does.

Inaugurated by Niles Mayor Andrew Przybylo and other company officials in Niles earlier this month, thousands and thousands of customers thronged the new Patel Brothers Indian grocery store. The Police had to shut the parking entrances. Inside, free samosas were distributed.

Founded in 1974 in what is called Little India of West Rogers Park by brothers Mafat, also a Jewel, and Talashi Patel, it was a small 800 sq.ft. Today, three generations of the family are taking care of the business which has now burgeoned into 50 stores in 19 US states, along with opening to online shopping and private label brands.

When Mafat and Talashi first started out, their store was meant to fulfil the food needs if migrants from the Indian subcontinent. They had no idea that their small store would grow to become the most loved brand of Asian grocery. Aruna, Talashi’s wife, says, “We’ll never forget those days when the cash register never opened”. While Mafat’s wife Chanchal stayed at home to take care of their families and kids, Aruna has worked at the very first store.

Although the store exclusively sells food items to suit Indian tastes, it has also become the go-to store for Indian spices and pulses for everyone.

After all these years, Patel Bros has become truly a “celebration of all cultures”.
