When you meet Amar Doulatani, it is sure that you will find it difficult to differentiate between a teacher and a trader, a social worker and a leader, a business man and literary person, a strict organizer and a relaxed music lover, an avid reader and writer. That the personality of this 73 year old senior citizen is as diverse as the land of this great country, and you would be convinced that you have come across very few people like Mr. Doulatani. To sum up he is perfection personified. Originally from a powerful and prosperous family of undivided Indian province of Sind, the Doulatanis have suffered a lot during the 1947 events, i.e. partition and independence. And after adopting Gujarat as their native in new India, they have regained their lost pride and of course, prosperity. The Doulatani family is in hospitality business in and around Ahmedabad; with the head of the family Mr. Amar Doulatani active in several fields apart from his business interests related to estate property and share investments. Both his sons Prakash and Girish and grandson Kushal managing their Hospitality business.
The “Journey”, that was NOT Smooth
After independence and partition (in 1947) Doulatani family left everything behind including properties of Home, Business and Lands etc. and migrated to Gujarat land with empty hands. Mr. Doulatani’s father late Shri Lachhmandasji was compelled to start cloth business at very small scale at Ahmedabad in order to meet the needs of family. Though uneducated himself, he wanted to see his son Amar get good education. Due to financial problems, Amar at the tender age of 12 years along with his studies started helping his father in business. After passing matric (XI standard) in 1959 he started his career as a typist in an engineering company with monthly salary of Rs.100, but soon he become teacher in school. After graduation and with scholarship he cleared his Master of Arts degree in year 1966. Though he wanted to pursue a Doctorate in literature thereafter, he could not do so taking in to account family needs as well as on his father’s insistence.
Amar’s father late Shree Lachhmandasji knew that without education man is blind. Being uneducated himself this thought always pinched his heart. After his death in 1996, Amar transferred his seventeen rooms’ bungalow with land area of 1350 sq.yd. at developed area of city for education purpose to one Gujarati registered charitable trust at a very low price to fulfill his fathers’ wish. Though he did put a condition that the trust will utilize the property to give education to needy / poor students only. Later on Mr. Doulatani formed his own family charitable Trust named “Faith Foundation”.
No Excuses, Only Results
Mr. Doulatani started his career of textile trading and subsequently became secretary of reputed Sindhi cloth Merchants Association in Ahmadabad. Over the years, he also ventured successfully in other fields of business. He strongly believes “There is difference between interest and commitment, when you are interested in doing something you do it only when it is convenient but when you are committed you accept no excuses but only results”.
In wholesale textile trading, Estate and Property Development Projects and Hotel business in all these ventures with his hard labour, support of family members and with the grace of God he always achieved success.
Master of all Personality
Mr. Doulatani’s association with literature cannot be ignored. He started giving articles in literary magazines, in 60’s and 70’s. He jointly edited “Chholyun” (Waves) magazine in Sindhi Language and earned praise from all corners. He even edited one “lekhan patrika” in Hindi of Bhasha Sahitya Institute. He has also contributed as a film critic.
He is also associated with many reputed social organizations and participated actively irrespective of the position he bears. Some to mention are Thalassaemia Jagruti Foundation, Gujarat Builders Association, Indian Institute of Sindhology, Akhil Bharat Sindhi Boli and Sahit Prachar Sabha & Vishwa Gujarati Samaj, Advisor to IndusInd and other Banks. Also on Government of India Advisory Committees of Textile, Western Railway (Z.R.U.C.C.), and on Telecommunication department BSNL / MTNL. Least to mention, in past also he was associated with several associations and a guiding force for many who came to him for help. Apart from above, voluntary legal advisory cell, Yoga Dhyan Kendra, Spiritual and Match Making activities are also introduced. Dance, Drama, Music, Fine Art Coaching and Kala Vikas Kendra were established. He holds significant positions in National and International organizations.
A prestigious award winner like Rashtriya Ekta Award & Rajiv Gandhi Peace Award for outstanding Services, Contributions & Achievements, he was also honoured at National & International Conventions and Conferences in India and abroad.
Mr. Doulatani is a firm believer of God. A follower of the Karma theory of Shreemad Bhagvad Gita he also believes nothing is above nation. Country comes first in priority. He says, “As you get older, don’t slow down, but speed up. There is less time left. It is not how old you are, it is how hard you work”. He has seen bad days and good days there is genuine saying which is applicable to Mr. Doulatani : “Born with personality is an accident but dying as personality is achievement”.
His inspirational life journey can be best described in the words of Robert Frost,

Gujarat truly houses the spirit of vibrancy with its rich cultural ethos & traditions while balancing them with contemporary thoughts & lifestyle.
The writers & poets of Gujarat have made remarkable contribution to World Literature while stalwarts like Mahatma Gandhi & Sardar Patel successfully lead India to Independence while keeping Gujarat as their Headquarters.
States contribution to Education & Technology has also been largely possible due to genuis’s like Dr Vikram Sarabhai, Kasturbhai Lalbhai, Sunita Williams to name a few.
Economic Development & Growth of the state & thereby the country has also been largely shouldered by Tata’s & Ambani’s who have their firm roots in Gujarat.
Gujarat is also popular as site of religious importance as it is home to Dakorji, Somnath, Ambaji & Dwarka which are most preferred destinations by pilgrims.

Amar Doulatani and his wife Kamla have three children. All of them are married. While daughter Veena married in reputed, prosperous and religious Israni Family, And both his daughter-in-laws Namita and Anjali are from cultured families, they know traditional values and present modern thoughts and care for the family in same manner.
