A Life Without Limits
He made his mark in the USA as the first Indian Worshipful Master of a Masonic Lodge. He also serves the cause of Muslims of Indian Origin. An admirable family and rewarding career, he’s had it all.
Being born in pre-independent India was a different kind of experience altogether. I was the eldest among five siblings, born on 5 October 1930, in Ferozepur City. My father, Diwan Singh Bhalla, was a physician and then a lieutenant in the British Indian Army of Reserve Officers, and my idol. We lovingly addressed him as Papaji. He was brought up by his uncle, Bawa Natha Singh Bhalla. After paternal grandfather’s demise the uncle ensured Papaji made the most of his life. Once through with his studies from Dayal Singh College and King Edward Medical College, Lahore, he took up a position of Medical Officer at a sugar mill in Jagadhri, which then was in Punjab and now in Haryana. Later he practiced medicine in Rawalpindi.
My mother, Balwant Kaur Sodhi, whom we addressed as Biji, too came from a progressive family. My maternal grandfather, Sodhi Kahan Singh, was a Risaldar Major, the highest rank that an Indian Army Officer could attain then, in Probyn Horse, King Edwards Own Lancers and fought in World War I.
Such an illustrious services background from both sides of my family left an indelible impact on my young and impressionable mind; the sight of an army uniform with its trappings and colours would stir my blood. In 1939, when I was in grade 5, Papaji was promoted as Captain in Indian Medical Services and called to active duty. He closed his practice and we moved to Jhelum, Quetta and then to Ferozepur while he was serving in Iraq and Malaysia. He often wrote to us. My maternal grandmother and Biji brought us up to their best with love and care. My younger brothers, Gurkirpal ‘Biloo’, Jatinder ‘Kodu’ and sisters, Ripudaman ‘Daman’ and Manjit ‘Guddo’ and I were leading a great life.
And then the horror of partition left a devastating trail of bloodshed and mayhem on both sides. Fortunately, we were on vacation in Kolhapur at that time where Papaji, after retiring from Army as Lieutenant Colonel, was commanding a Polish Refugee Camp.
Sacrifices make a better future
To my good luck, I was offered a junior veterinarian job in 1976 at Port Washington facility of a multinational American company: Charles River Laboratories, based in Boston, specialising in a variety of preclinical and clinical laboratory services for the pharmaceutical, medical devices and biotechnology industries. The timing was perfect as it coincided with the grant of green cards to the whole family for V petitioned. And hence, I joined there on 10 April 1976. Being the Army, I expected the same kind of discipline, unquestioned loyalty and respect from the employees. This did cause some serious management issues but very soon I realised and moulded myself into the management style. In the meantime, Kanwal taught International Relations at CW Post College at Brookville NY for a year when we decided to open an Indian Restaurant in Manhasset Long Island with the similar name and menu as Jatinder’s restaurant in Los Angeles – Paul Bhalla’s Cuisine of India.
I received well-deserved promotions as the Vice President and Subsidiary President in 1982, Eventually, I served Charles River Labs for 30 years, retiring in 2006 at the age of 76 years. I made close friends with Dr HL Foster, the Founder Chairman, whom I reported to in the Labs, from whom I learnt the importance of giving back to the community. Sikhism teaches the same values too. In July of the same year, we opened the restaurant for dinners only which Kanwal managed single-handedly with Goan curry and Garhwali tandoori chefs. Within six weeks of its opening the restaurant was awarded two stars by New York Times.
Kanwal is the reason Gurpreet and Narinder are taking the family legacy forward today. Gurpreet completed his MD and fellowship in anesthesia from NYU and Narinder completed his MD from Buffalo Medical College, Chief Residency and Fellowship in Cardiology from NYU. Gurpreet ran an independent Anesthesia Corporation for 25 years and has since retired to their sprawling villa in Reedsville. His wife, Jyotish, is also an Anesthesiologist and Pain Management Physician, but her passion is gourmet cooking. Their son Ravi, after graduating from Yale Law School, has joined a prestigious boutique law firm of Susman & Godfrey in Manhattan. Narinder, after practicing 25 years in Interventional Cardiology, has joined the corporate world and is Executuve Director, Head of Cardiovascular Bio Pharmaceuticals Medical, CVRM at AstraZeneca. His wife, Tracy, a wonderful teacher, is fond of horseback riding. While their 11-year-old son, Ashton, and two horses and score of other animals, live with them, their daughter, Sonya, completed BS from University of Delaware and is a Registered Dietician and Certified Diabetes Educator working as Clinical Territory Manager for Medtronic Diabetes in CA.
Success is giving it back to the community
I joined Masonic Lodge in India in 1964 and continued with Free Masonry in New York. I became the first Indian with a turban to be a Worshipful Master of a Masonic Lodge in the USA. Upon moving to Texas, I joined Morton Masonic Lodge in Richmond who awarded me Golden Trowel, the highest award given by the Lodge in 2015. I am a founder member of Indian Muslims Association of Greater Houston (IMAGH) which fosters harmony, strengthens relationship between religions and cultures and enrich the community.
Both Kanwal and I carry on with our best in the service of the community that has given us the love, respect and good living.
