Determination, perseverance and true grit are the qualities that best describe entrepreneur and businessman Deepak Chopra. It is these qualities coupled with luck and good timing that were responsible for a turn of events leading to decades of success and good fortune. Today, he leads a company of specialised electronic systems and components for critical applications in security, healthcare, defence and aerospace industries.
Deepak was born in 1950, in Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh. It is here that his Punjabi roots and strong work ethic took anchor and continue to flourish to this day. At a young age, Deepak showed strong signs of being able to multitask. He enjoyed tinkering with cars, trains, air guns and the like. During his school years Deepak excelled in areas of leadership and innovation and was the recipient of gold medals and high honors. In 1967 he joined the Punjab Engineering College in Chandigarh to pursue a degree in Electronic Engineering.
Deepak had his heart set on studying further in the USA and in 1971, he succeeded in following his dream. He received a scholarship at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and graduated with a master’s degree in Electronic Engineering in 1973. While studying at the University of Massachusetts, during his summer holidays Deepak worked at Hardees, a hamburger chain in Boston as a cook flipping burgers and living the American dream!
Deepak rounded his education by completing an executive MBA programme with Stanford University in 1984 while working at a full-time job at ILC Tech San Jose CA.
Deepak’s first job in 1973, was with RCA in New Jersey. While working at RCA Corporation, New Jersey, Deepak was sent to a technological conference in Los Angeles California. He fell in love with the weather and the beaches and decided to move to Southern California. He quit his job at RCA and moved to California without a job. Within a short period, he started his new job at TRW Semiconductor. He never looked back and has been a native Californian ever since. In 1979, he joined Intel Corporation in San Jose, CA. In 1980, Deepak moved to LA to run a division of ILC Technology a hi-tech specialty lighting and opto-electronic company in San Jose CA. In 1987 Deepak left ILC Technology and his wife Nandini, inspired and motivated him to pursue his dream of starting his own Semi-conductor company. Raising money as a minority Indian Punjabi was challenging in the 80’s. Deepak’s resolve was strong and unshakable. His relentless tenacity came to the fore once again and he was able to raise the money. His father in law, Madan Syal, an engineer together with some friends put together money along with Deepak selling his house to start the company in 1987.
