Don’t all great quests begin with a question? Well, in this true story of how a renaissance of emotions spurred the creation of a spectacular book, it was a son’s question that began it all.
A Question, An Idea …
He had built himself a life far removed from where his parents once began. But almost every day of those 15-odd years in the distant land, there was always one thought that lingered in his otherwise occupied mind. “What had my parents’ life truly been like?”
Growing up, he had heard stories of rural life, one shaped by modest means and sometimes absence of even the basic necessities.
But those stories were just fragments. The son wanted to dig deeper. He wanted to understand how the journey unfolded – from humble beginnings to crossing continents and building a life for themselves and their family.
From his teenage years to his forties, this question stayed with him. The desire to document this journey was outweighed by vicissitudes of life. The idea was discussed, deliberated, but it remained just that – an idea.
From Idea to Legacy
Every idea needs someone to shape it into reality and Maneesh Media became the architect. As we began working with the family, we realised that this was more than a book. This was the fulfilment of a decades-long quest to discover who the family truly was.
Our interactions began from simple questions and before long we had become a part of their journey, drinking tea, listening to memories and anecdotes that brought smiles, tears, and more on their faces and ours.
Factual storytelling is never linear. It has to follow the flow, where the mind takes the narrator and as we navigated the pauses and the excess of information, we knew that this was more than just a book in the making.
We were building something magnificent, story by story, emotion by emotion. The idea was becoming a legacy.
Bridge to Communication
As a storyteller and publisher there is nothing more satisfying than witnessing the reconnections that were once lost to time and lapsed communication. This book became the bridge. The family, immediate and extended, sat together, conversations restarted, and relationships mended. And in between all this, emerged a reservoir of memories that had been stored deep in the recesses of mind. And as they flowed freely, so did our craft shape them into an authentic telling of this family’s extraordinary journey from rural India to the bright lights and promises of the United States.
A Desire Fulfilled, A Legacy Secured
The question that the son had lived with for all these years had now found the answer. It was now recorded for posterity in the pages and words that would outlast any of them. The book is now a memory bank, for the next generation to dip into and borrow the wealth of wisdom from the lives their ancestors once lived.
Is there anything more fulfilling than that? No, there is not.
Not for the Son, not for us. His family’s legacy continues and so does ours – as storytellers and bridges that bring people together.
