Youngest entrepreneur in the fast lane

Making his first million while still in school, a passion for colourful Rolls Royce and turbans to match, this Sikh strikes the perfect balance between his ethnicity and his nationality.

I was born on 20 September 1976 in Manchester, England. From a very young age, my parents instilled strong values in me such as ethics, integrity and hard work. My mother instilled a fearless drive and unwavering ambition in me. She gave me the confidence to dream big, saying “dreams aren’t those you see when you sleep, but what you ponder over when you’re awake”. My father, a self-made businessman, mentored me to adopt his humility and sincerity, the bedrock of my achievements today. He is the most disciplined person I’ve ever met; he gave me a right and fearless attitude to pursue my dreams. They were both well-educated from Delhi University and had moved to the UK in the early 1970s. They sure had a strong business sense; after some initial ups and downs, they set up their own business in the UK.

At school, I was incredibly inquisitive, always asking “why?” to everything. I studied hard enough to be academically successful, however, I believe my teachers would probably describe me as an ‘awkward’ student as I always wanted to know the reason behind.

I started working for Dad’s company when I was 11. By the time I was 17, I wanted to open my own business. I had my first shop, Miss Attitude, up and running in 1995, before I left school; it sold fashion accessories – hair scrunchies, clips, scarves, jewellery, bags and sunglasses. The idea for this particular business had struck me when I was still in school. I invested all my savings on it. By 1999, Miss Attitude had a chain of stores throughout the UK.

Taking a cue from Dad, I wanted to make it on my own initiative. I believe now that while growing up, I did not have a silver spoon but a silver net to fall back on, it is this privilege that I want to extend to those who have less than myself. This is why I want to give back to the community with my scholarship and mentorship programmes. I today support the Prince’s Trust to guide and promote young entrepreneurs. In 2015, we had launched the Reuben Singh Scholarship to support higher education and help kids work on their business ideas.

I will always recognise my parents as a huge influence in my life. My late mother is still my guide to this day, her business acumen is a doctrine that I will forever follow and emulate. I believe that my three identities are what keep me inspired; a modern interpretation of my Sikh religion combined with my strong ties to my Indian heritage, as well as my patriotism to Britain.

After Mom, my wife, Baani, assumed the role of preserving the ambition that she had instilled in me. Baani always tries her best to keep me humble and grateful too.

Four rules of success: Guru, sincerity, humility and integrity

I’ve always wanted to follow my parents’ footsteps into entrepreneurship, in 1999, I sold off Miss Attitude to found alldayPA to offer the best outsourcing services globally. In 1998, I was recorded as the youngest self-made millionaire in Guinness Book of World Records. In 2002, I was invited to serve on a Government Advisory Panel and Government Task Force by the Prime Minister Tony Blair. We also founded Government’s Small Business Council and was appointed the Ambassador for Entrepreneurship by the Prime Minister. Not only was I named Asian Entrepreneur of the Year, I also was winning the Entrepreneur of the Year Award consecutively for three years. One moment that I’ll never forget is being invited to Buckingham Palace by Her Majesty the Queen to be honoured as a Pioneer of the Nation. It was a pivotal career-defining moment for me and a complete honour.

Not everything, however, goes according to plan. My darkest phase was the period between 2005 and 2007. Every entrepreneur goes through phases through their lives when things don’t go according to plan. My darkest days occurred between 2005 and 2007, I was fighting the institutions to save my business and I sadly lost my mother who was the rock in my life. I overcame these tribulations by having utter faith in my religion and trusting that the dark days would teach me valuable lessons; to this day I believe that success doesn’t teach you, failure does.

My focus changed, so did my vision and attitude. While I always have followed Sikhism, I also developed an immense faith in the Guru. In 2010, I launched Isher Capital, an investment company, and without ever losing my faith, kept setting myself higher benchmarks than the year before. In 2014, we opened Isher Business Park in Manchester.

If I could get into a time machine, I would go back to the moment where I was fighting to save my business and give myself the advice to have humility like my father and accept where I had gone wrong, this would’ve humbled me and helped to diffuse the situation.

A true Punjabi, inside-out

I like to help better society focusing on youth causes and cancer, the illness to which I sadly lost my mother. Though, with my businesses, I generally lack time I strive to be there for people as an emotional support and aim to provide others with a strong sense of an adopted family nucleus.

Faith and religion make a large part of our family. My business and social endeavours allow me to travel all around the world and be a part of some unforgettable events. While I’m away from home, my wife works tirelessly to ensure that our children have a simple, home life. She helps them to understand our family values and appreciate them while being eternally grateful to everything that we have been blessed with by Wahe Guru.

I always look for guidance from our 10th guru Shri Guru Gobind Singh ji. He was a warrior, leader, humanitarian as well as founder of Khalsa. I look to his regal presence and inner spiritual being for inspiration and a reflection on how to live my life to the fullest.

As a true Punjabi, food is essential to everything that we do in our family. I never hold a staff event without food, up until recently langar was served to my staff in my offices which was prepared in our family home each week.

I don’t really believe in a work-life balance, the sheer responsibility that I have for the thousands of people who are employed, both directly and indirectly, by my organisations requires sacrifice on my part. Spending time with your family is important but it has to be accepted that sacrifices need to be made. At the moment, until such time that I can stand back from the daily affairs of my companies, the family life does have sacrifices. My young children are growing up in a business-focused household and regularly accompany me on trips just as I did with my parents. My favourite time of day is the midnight coffee that I share with my father every night that I am home. He graces me with his wisdom about religion, business and it is always the highlight of my day.

Philosophy

Having sincerity, integrity and humility in everything that you do is the secret to success. I believe that staying true to your beliefs, following the teachings of your gurus and having faith are the keys to achieving absolute happiness.

I love…

My fleet of 27 Rolls Royces, Classic Ferraris and Bugattis. I also love going to the cinema with my wife, Baani.

Success Mantra

That thing that you build on being strong enough to make decisions while not being afraid to make mistakes… is success.

I’d suggest the youth…

To stay humble, learn from their mistakes. Die with memories, not dreams.

The world doesn’t know that…

How important I feel about doing sewa discreetly.
