The ‘Kenny’ Factor: “If one maintains the right principles, honesty, and ambition, the Almighty God will always be present with you.”
THE MAN
The bamboo that bends is stronger than the oak that resists. Kirti ‘Kenny’ Desai’s life story is of a man whose strong will, and determination bent everything in his favour.
Kenny, born on 2 April 1960, in Amreli, Gujarat, comes from a remarkable family lineage, in which his grandfather was a distinguished criminal barrister and a former classmate of Late Indian Prime Minister Morarji Desai.
Despite coming from a respectable family, Kenny’s early years were marked by struggles and fuelled by self-reliance. To fund his education, he worked multiple part-time jobs and also did small-time silver-making trade during his college years. Supported by his father, Gajendra, and mother, Padma, Kenny persevered to cultivate the ingenious entrepreneur in him. His greatest inspiration remains his grandfather and mentor, Narottam Das Vakil, who planted the seeds of ambition, declaring, “You are meant for greatness. You cannot be confined to a small arena.” This statement became Kenny’s lifelong compass, as he established himself in India and then moved to the US. Today, he stands as Managing Director at Aurous Financial and President at TAK Group, which is now an established financial, real estate, infrastructure, and health care business.
THE JOURNEY
Kenny’s primary education took place in Amreli. While studying for his graduation at Morbi College, Kenny decided to pursue engineering from prestigious M.S. University in Baroda, which came with its own challenges. It was a competitive admission process, which he secured through relentless and unbreakable will. While studying, Kenny worked several part-time jobs, including working for various banks during holidays, where his sharp financial sense rightly earned him the name “a walking calculator”.
After he completed his civil engineering degree, Kenny began as an Assistant Engineer on Gujarat’s Narmada Project. A hunger to learn and limited activity at the Narmada Project led Kenny to take a side job as a site engineer on various commercial projects, where dealing with goons and employing them on the same project simultaneously solidified his belief that his destiny lay elsewhere. His grandfather recognised this drive and encouraged him to move out of the country.
In 1983, he married Trupti, whose unwavering belief and support became his anchor. He moved to New Jersey, USA, by 1986, where his early days were far from easy. Kenny worked unpaid in construction projects, while running a small Indian vegetarian restaurant with his wife and family. He made it through all while studying at night for his master’s degree at Stevens Institute of Technology.
His entrepreneurial spirit led him to launch his own firm in 1987. He began the TAK Group, in New Jersey with US$15 in his bank account. Kenny, a firm believer in the Almighty, staked his future on his faith and determination not to give up. He believes that his faith and hard work are the reason that his firm’s fortunes surged, sending his business “up the roof”.
His firm, since then, has been part of large-scale institutional, commercial, hospitality, health care, residential, and government projects. He proudly considers building Newark International Airport’s hangars and monorail infrastructure and interiors as one of his greatest achievements. TAK Group has become a titan of US infrastructure, and has expanded to trade finance and health care. A respected business leader, Kenny is on the State of New Jersey Governor’s Advisory Council and a Commissioner on the New Jersey-India Commission, the first US state-level body of its kind.
A recipient of numerous accolades, including the Prestigious Ellis Island Medal of Honor Award, Kenny was recognised for his contributions as the Federation of India Association (FIA) President during India’s 75th Independence Day celebrations. During his tenure as FIA President, Kenny achieved the seemingly impossible — he successfully led the Association in setting two Guinness World Records in a single day: one for “most different flags flown simultaneously” and another for “the largest Damru (hourglass-shaped handheld drum) Ensemble.”
THE SPIRIT WITHIN
Kenny is a devout believer in giving back to society. His philanthropic actions speak volumes about his humility, generous heart, and giving spirit. Kenny built the first Lord Balaji temple in New Jersey, whose divine grace and blessings he attributes to his success and continues to serve there as trustee. He has also built three other temples, including a Mahatma Gandhi Temple, a world-first. He has actively been involved with Vraj Temple in Pennsylvania, holding leadership positions such as president, chairman and vice-chairman over the years; he currently serves as a trustee of the temple.
His philanthropic activities focus on religious education and community building, across the US and India. Every project is a symbol of his gratitude. Kenny says, “All my social work flows through God’s will and grace.” He is the Vice Chairman of the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, and its trustee and that of many other premier cultural and educational institutions, including World Vegan Vision and Vidya Vikas Charitable Trust.
THE LEGACY
Kenny has spent a lifetime building magnificent infrastructures. Through the ups and downs, not once has he abandoned his giving back spirit and the strong family values. A devoted husband to his wife, Trupti, Kenny credits all their family’s success to her. Trupti held the family together and provided essential financial and emotional support during his initial struggles in America.
He says, “My wife doesn’t believe in materialism and lives a very simple life. She is my strength and my biggest supporter.” Kenny’s family success is a testament to the fact that his focus was never purely on professional gain; he also ensured his three children, Komal, Vikas, and Bhavik, remained deeply rooted in their culture and values despite their upbringing in the US.
He speaks proudly of his children, “We sent our children to Vivekananda Vidyapith so they stay rooted and remember the values. Today, they are very successful and still connected to their roots, and it fills me with joy.”
His life proves that the biggest arenas are not just corporate, but also the ones where service and faith flourish. What began as a young man’s dream has transformed into a legacy that touches lives, landscapes, and hearts. He says, “No dream is too distant when it is anchored in devotion.”
MAPPING THE INDIA WITHIN
Bharat: Then and Now
“India is my ‘matrubhoomi’ (motherland), and I am proud to call it my birthplace. Patriotism ran in our veins then, and I believe it still does. Today, I see India as a global leader—an emerging powerhouse of innovation, and economic strength.”
Bharatiya Values that Travelled
“True happiness lies within, not in material possessions, this is a lesson that I have carried everywhere with me. The values of hard work, simplicity, humility, and gratitude are what make us Indian.”
Generations Abroad: A New Bharatiya Identity
“My children have read the Vedas, know the Bhagavad Gita by heart. Despite living in a foreign land, India beats in their hearts too. They carry our heritage proudly into the next generation, blending global vision with Indian wisdom.”
Pride, Progress, and the Spirit Of Bharat
“India is on the path to becoming a prosperous and self-reliant nation. I deeply respect Mahatma Gandhi for giving us Independence. And now I admire Prime Minister Narendra Modi for steering the country with vision and determination. I believe India is in capable hands.”
Dreams for the Youth and Future of Bharat
“Indian youth are smart and have unlimited potential. I want them to dream big, work hard, and stay anchored in their culture. My dream is to see India stand at the forefront of the world —not just as a financial power, but as a moral one.”
