The ‘Sushil’ Factor: “Your reputation takes years to build and minutes to lose. Act with care.”
THE MAN
We all face challenges; it is what we make of it that defines success and legacy. Sushil Kejriwal learned the art of persistence and resilience from his father, Prahlad Raj Kejriwal.
In 1955, Prahlad moved to Kolkata from Bangladesh, where his family had a traditional rice business. Prahlad decided to pivot from his family’s business to establish Kejriwal Iron & Steel Works in 1957. A decade of success was followed by an upheaval when the 1970 Naxalite upheaval forced the family to relocate to Delhi. Having nearly lost everything, Prahlad began from scratch, founding Supra Enterprise in 1971 and proving that tough times don’t last but tough people do.
Sushil, born in Calcutta (Kolkata) grew up watching his father build his venture without compromising on quality while dealing with sincerity and punctuality. He learned that leadership is earned through hard work and integrity. From his mother, Pushpa Devi, he inherited moral clarity and ethical resolve.
Years later, when Sushil joined his father’s business, these values became the base for the evolution of a small business to a multi-faceted conglomerate.
THE JOURNEY
Sushil joined the business right after his academic training at the Manipal Institute of Technology as an engineer. As the son of the owner, Sushil had a short-cut to success. But Sushil decided to earn success the hard way, the right way. He began from scratch, learning the operations, the nuances, and the ethics needed to not just create a profitable business but to create a credit-worthy and trusted organisation.
Under his father’s pioneering vision of Prahlad and foundational wisdom of Pushpa Devi, the Supra Group thrived. A major turning point came in the 1990s when Prahlad identified the privatisation of India’s power sector as a strategic opportunity. This led to the establishment of the 7.2 MW Birahi Ganga hydropower project in Uttarakhand, and later the acquiring of the 5 MW Yogindera Powers project in Himachal Pradesh—setting multiple Indian firsts in renewable energy. The company also expanded into agriculture through Supra Farms & Leasing Limited, reflecting a sustained commitment to clean power and India’s agrarian roots.
As the Managing Director, Sushil has continued to scale this legacy with the company offering an expansive portfolio that includes the manufacture and supply of ductile and cast iron pipes, valves, and fittings for critical water and sewerage projects, alongside providing end-to-end turnkey infrastructure solutions. The group has earned many prestigious accolades, such as the ‘Most Trusted Company in Turnkey Projects,’ while maintaining a remarkably stable work culture.
THE SPIRIT WITHIN
Sushil learned early on that integrity is not situational. “I saw my father prioritise people over profits, ensuring commitments were honoured even in uncertain times. That lesson became a lifelong anchor,” he shares. “He ensured that the workers were paid their wages on time during a difficult business phase, even when cash flow was strained.” Perhaps that is why the company has had the lowest employee turnover rate for years.
Sushil has continued to follow his father’s footsteps, applying the people-first approach in both work and philanthropy. From supporting rural water infrastructure, healthcare access through free medical and eye camps, and establishing institutions like the Kejriwal Hospital, he has ensured that positive change trickles down to those who need it the most. During crises, be it any natural disasters or the COVID-19 pandemic, his focus remained on safeguarding employees and supporting surrounding communities. “One of the most meaningful forms of service for me has been quietly supporting education—helping with fees, books, or training for students who are serious about their future. ”
THE LEGACY
Family is the cornerstone of Sushil’s life. It has always been his source of grounding, a space where success is measured not by outcomes but by conduct. He consciously applies the principles of discipline, humility, empathy, and respect for effort, which shaped him, while raising his children. “I believe family conversations, cultural continuity, and consistency between words and actions form the core of this upbringing, and that’s what I follow at home,” Sushil says. “My children don’t need to hear my values. Instead, they need to see them being lived every day.”
Following in his father’s footsteps, Sushill’s son, Rishabh, joined the company in 2017, becoming the third generation of Kejriwals to add to the multi-generational legacy of expertise and carry forward the Kejriwal name.
Rishabh has a great teacher in his father and so do all the other young leaders that Sushil mentors. “I encourage young leaders to build skills before chasing titles, and to learn how to handle pressure without losing courtesy. Most importantly, I try to pass on the idea that leadership is service—your job is to make others better, not to prove that you are better.”
And Sushil Kejriwal is among the rare few who practice what they preach and prove that leadership is indeed about empowering others to excel.
MAPPING THE INDIA WITHIN
Bharat: Then and Now
“As a child, Bharat was home—family, festivals, familiar streets, and emotional security. Today, it represents much more: confidence, ambition, and global presence. The emotional bond remains unchanged, but my pride has deepened as I’ve witnessed Bharat evolve into a nation of growing capability and international influence.”
Bharatiya Values that Travelled
“Wherever I go, I carry Bharatiya values of warmth, respect, resilience, and responsibility. These show up in how I treat people, build relationships, and stay rooted in culture—through language, food, festivals, and ethics. Even abroad, these values quietly shape how I live and work.”
Generations Abroad: A New Bharatiya Identity
“My children and I represent a new Bharatiya identity—globally competitive yet culturally grounded. We adapt easily, value relationships, and persevere through challenges. At the same time, we aim to contribute positively wherever we are, being ethical, professional, and proud ambassadors of Bharat.”
Pride, Progress, and the Spirit Of Bharat
“My journey reflects Bharat’s spirit of ambition with endurance. I have built step by step, without shortcuts, trusting effort and integrity. That ability to dream beyond one’s circumstances and work relentlessly toward progress mirrors Bharat’s own rise—quietly resilient, steadily aspirational, and deeply proud.”
Dreams for the Youth and Future of Bharat
“My enduring dream is a Bharat where world-class education, clean environments, and dignified opportunities reach everyone. To the youth, my message is simple: stay hungry to learn, fearless in action, and humble in success. A future rooted in values will always be Bharat’s greatest strength.”
