On a Steady Run to Success & More

The ‘Arun’ Factor: “If you want to succeed, make sure everyone around you succeeds too.”

THE MAN

Some journeys are unplanned. They begin quietly, but end up shaping industries, ideas, and communities across continents. For Arun Agarwal, who was born on 10 October 1963 in Jodhpur, life unfolded through moments that kept pushing him towards his destiny.

Arun’s father, Anand Kishor, had moved the family to Jaipur in order to build a business from scratch. “Watching him work taught me that there is no substitute for hard work and effort.”

His mother, Shakuntala, the rock of the family ensured that her three children, Anil, Arun, and Alka, received the best education possible even if it meant sacrificing comforts at home.

Growing up in Jaipur’s Ambabari was fun. “We were neither rich nor poor. We were comfortably middle class.” He remembers cycling to school every day with friends, cherishing the rare thrill of a bike from his parents — a special treat in a modest household.

Arun dreamt of becoming a doctor but after failing to clear the Pre-Medical Test (PMT) twice, he joined Maharaja College for his BSs degree. College life had its twists and turns, throwing him into student politics. He even won the Joint Secretary elections, despite being pressured by local groups to step down. But politics was never the endgame for Arun. He was meant for a grander pitch.

THE JOURNEY

An MBA from Institute of Management Technology, Ghaziabad opened the doors to his professional world. His first job became the foundation of his work ethic. He joined Onida, then among the top television brands in India, as the Executive Assistant of the Managing Director, Sonu Mirchandani. Arun fondly calls this “one of the best times” of his career. He thrived in the ‘out-of-the-box’ thinking environment and rose quickly to become Regional Manager for Eastern India, a role that would eventually change his life. It was in Calcutta (now Kolkata), that he met Anu, who would later become his wife and his life’s greatest influence. Anu left for her studies in the US, and Arun followed her to do his Master’s at Southern New Hampshire University in Boston. He was offered a job in Texas, which he accepted only after getting his first boss’s permission, honouring his promise to return—because honesty, for him, was non-negotiable.

Texas was supposed to be temporary. But then came the Green Card sponsorship, and the short-term gig turned into a permanent one. Arun worked with a consulting firm and then with MBNA America Bank, the first to pioneer FNAT marketing, where he was part of the core team.

Arun and Anu’s entrepreneurial chapter began in the small garage of their home. Their first venture, ‘Send A Smile’ helped NRIs send gifts to their families back home. Created when there was no internet, it did well and soon evolved into SAS Living, a home decor wholesale company, followed by S2 Resources, a sourcing and logistics firm.

In 2008, Arun founded NEXTT, now a global powerhouse in textiles and consumer goods, supplying major retailers including Walmart. NEXTT later ventured into technology solutions, especially in clean energy, adopting innovations that helped coal burning power plants reduce emissions and coal usage, a rare combination of industry and environmental responsibility. Today, many power plants adopt and use NEXTT AI across the globe. Despite achieving the pinnacle of success, Arun remains grounded. “I planned none of this. I just stepped into what felt right and worked hard,” he says. A respected entrepreneur, he is the Chair of the Board of Directors of the Texas Economic Development Corporation in Austin.

THE SPIRIT WITHIN

The invisible helping hands he encountered in his journey have shaped Arun’s philanthropic philosophy. His philanthropy spans both India and the US as he believes, “besides giving back to the birth country, it is also necessary that we give back to where we’re living. In Dallas, he supports education, community initiatives, and parks, as the President of the City of Dallas Parks and Recreation Board.

The NEXTT Foundation has also played a transformative role, especially during COVID-19, sending over US$1 million worth of respirators and PPE kits to Rajasthan, an effort supported by the Mayor of Dallas. He also supports CHETNA, which his wife, Anu, co-founded to support victims of domestic violence from South Asian backgrounds.

He believes, “Giving back is not just about financial support. Sometimes, the time you offer to local communities does more than the money you donate.”

THE LEGACY

Arun never dreamed of being where he finds himself today—successful, accomplished, and content. He credits Anu with the direction their life has taken. She has been his sounding board and guiding light since the day they met. “Without Anu, I would not be where I am today. It was her vision that encouraged me to move out of my comfort zone and do something different.” Their daughter, Anya, is 24 years old, and pursuing Medicine at Tulane University, New Orleans. Anya has grown up observing her parents balance work and family. Both Anu and Arun continue to work hard not because they need to earn, but because they find fulfilment in what they do.

When asked about legacy, Arun confesses he does not put too much weight on the term. “For me, it’s not about leaving a name after you die. It is the good you do today, the impact you make in society right now. So, I focus on making a difference in the present.”

Arun, like most Indians, is a cricket fan, and he has taken his love for the game a notch up by founding the National Cricket League (NCL) in the US. With Sachin Tendulkar joining as a partner, the league, in its second year, is already growing in popularity.

NCL’s Sixty Strike format might be limited to 60 balls, but Arun’s playing the long game, scoring a run of every ball in life.

MAPPING THE INDIA WITHIN

Bharat: Then and Now

“When I left India, youth aspirations were limited. Today, 20-year-olds start businesses knowing they can change the world. India has become a brand, and people finally take pride in it. The IT sector that has done wonders to the country, the political environment, and the opportunities have highly contributed to the country’s growth and the feeling of patriotism within its people.”

Bharatiya Values that Travelled

“Even in the foreign land, I stick to the belief in Karma. I believe in being honest and the importance of hard work. The only way to succeed is with these values, no matter where we live”.

Generations Abroad: A New Bharatiya Identity

“Anya has grown up seeing me and Anu being proud of where we come from. She’s fluent in Hindi and Bengali — it shows her multicultural roots.”

Pride, Progress, and the Spirit Of Bharat

“The spirit of Bharat is unique. It calls you back. India grows on people because of its multiculturalism and its deep, living history.”

Dreams for the Youth and Future of Bharat

“The infrastructure is transforming at lightning speed. Highways, connectivity, everything is growing. But I believe that basic urban systems are still being neglected.

“To the youth I would say that the world is your oyster. You are very lucky to be a part of one of the largest economies in the world. Use it to your advantage. If you succeed and build strong connections, you are supporting the future generations of India.”
