Supporting The Voice of the Displaced

When Dr Umesh K. Gidwani, one of our esteemed honourees in Jewels of India – Bharat Ki Shaan, Bharat Ka Abhiman Vol. 1, brought the work Hindu Singh Sodha does to our notice, we were humbled, and in turn we wanted to do our part and highlight his determined efforts.

Dr Gidwani, whose own family was displaced from Sindh during Partition, is now a  Professor of Medicine at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York and has remained deeply connected to his roots and works closely with UJAS-Jodhpur, supporting efforts to provide education, shelter and dignity to displaced Hindu-Sindhi families.

For communities displaced from their homes, rebuilding a life is rarely about finding a place to live. It is about finding security, opportunity and a sense of belonging.

That remains at the heart of Sodha’s continuing work with Pakistani Hindu migrant communities in Rajasthan. Through Seemant Lok Sangathan and UJAS, Sodha has spent decades working on citizenship, rehabilitation, livelihoods and education—helping families move beyond the immediate challenges of displacement towards greater stability and self-reliance.

Focusing on the next generation, he has ensured access to education, remedial learning and early childhood support so that children from displaced communities can find more opportunities for a new beginning.

Sodha’s work therefore extends beyond individual families to strengthening entire communities and their prospects for the future. His efforts continue to demonstrate that true rehabilitation is not simply about resettlement. It is about creating communities where families can belong, children can learn, livelihoods can grow, and the next generation can look ahead with hope.
