Arihanta Institute: The Gateway To a Kinder Future

There is much to be learned from the 2,5000-year-old wisdom of an ancient philosophy. For centuries, Jain teachings have been preserved through scriptures, scholars, monks, and oral traditions. But where does one find an accessible gateway to that knowledge? Arihanta Institute has become that gateway, especially for a world that is desperately in search of an ethical North Star.

We just observed yet another World Environment Day. But is that enough? Climate scientists are issuing final warnings amid industrial farms flouting rules and countries reneging on agreed frameworks. Geopolitical violence is being normalised.

If one were to describe the world’s situation in Gen Z lingo, we’d say, “We are cooked.”  They would be correct had it not been for the answer that has been staring at us for over 2,5000 years –  The ancient philosophy of Jainism.

And it is available to the global audience through non-profits like the Arihanta Institute, which has been working tirelessly to make the wisdom accessible through scholarship, structured learning, and a commitment to preserving and sharing Jain knowledge.

In doing so, the Institute is bringing this ancient philosophy into some of the most urgent conversations of the 21st century, demonstrating its relevance to the ethical, environmental, and social challenges of our time.

Born From Conviction

Arihanta was born in April 2022, from the conviction of a small group of people who understood that the world needed and deserved access to Jain wisdom and teachings.

The name Arihanta was intentional. Arihanta – one who has conquered the inner enemies of passion, ego, and ignorance. In Jain cosmology, it is more than a title; it is an aspiration that reflects in everything that the institute does.

Today, the institute stands on three foundational pillars

1)    A fully online Master of Arts in Engaged Jain Studies, delivered in partnership with Claremont School of Theology — the first programme of its kind in the world, now joined by a pioneering PhD track.

2)    A global platform for scholarly dialogue: conferences, speaker series, webinars, and podcasts that have engaged over 100 distinguished scholars annually.

3)    A lifelong learning resource of 70+ courses, now serving more than 1,800 students across 25+ countries — people who arrived curious, and left changed.

Equally important are its four interdisciplinary initiatives: the Vegan Studies Initiative (VSI), the Compassion Studies Initiative (CSI), the Center for the Study of Jain Yoga (CSJY), and the Center for South Asian Languages (CSAL) — which offers instruction in Sanskrit, Gujarati, Ardhamāgadhī Prākṛt, and Pāli.  And then there is the Tīrthaṅkara Śreyāmśanātha Endowed Professorship in Vegan and Animal Advocacy Studies — the first of its kind in the world.

Why Jainism? Why Now?

Dr. Parveen Jain, Founder & CEO, Arihanta Institute, has a disarmingly simple answer. “In a world increasingly marked by violence, suffering, and erosion of ethical values, these teachings have never been more vital.” Indeed, this ancient philosophy contains within it solutions to many of the most urgent challenges confronting our world today — and offers a path to address them while causing the least possible harm to humanity.

Centred on the concepts of ahimṣā, karuṇā, aparigraha, and anekāntavāda, Jainism has never been merely about satiating one’s spiritual curiosity. It has always been regarded as a rigorous intellectual and academic discipline. What was once confined to the study and practice of the Jain community is today finding strong resonance among scholars, researchers, and seekers around the globe.

It is uncanny how its four principles function as a roadmap to a more ethical world — and speak to everyone, irrespective of belief.

Ahimṣā (non-violence), anekāntavāda (pluralism of truth), aparigraha (non-possession), and karuṇā (compassion) are strikingly contemporary in relevance today. If you advocate for animals, ethical business practices, or veganism, you are already engaging with ahimṣā. If you recognise that truth can exist in many forms and rise above the algorithms, echo chambers, and epistemic tribalism, you understand anekāntavāda. If you consciously reduce consumption and practise self-restraint, you have begun to grasp aparigraha, which asks not for deprivation but for reflection on what we truly need. And karuṇā, perhaps the most radical principle of all, reminds us that compassion is not merely a feeling but an action.

A Kinder World, One Student At A Time

The teachings of Jainism are not complex and institutions like Arihanta Institute are vital to the process of making this wisdom accessible and adaptable. Arihanta Institute offers a way to take these principles and put them into practice through education, research, and global dialogue. Its courses, degree programmes, conferences, speaker series, and interdisciplinary initiatives connect Jain principles with contemporary issues such as climate change, animal advocacy, professional ethics, social justice, and compassionate leadership.

At Arihanta it is not just about statistics. The numbers are indicative of a larger purpose and drive. Behind every enrolment is a hardworking, relentless volunteer. Every celebrated conference, talk, or study has been driven by one or more board and faculty members, who have put their faith in the idea.

The Arihanta Institute is a collection of individuals who have devoted their lives to bringing the light of age-old wisdom to the world.  This is not proselytising. Far from that. This is a mission to give the future a kinder world.

In 2026, with 1,800+ students enrolled across 25+ countries, a growing PhD programme, and a faculty producing scholarship that is reshaping how the world understands Jain thought, Arihanta Institute is creating a global movement.

Ask any student at Arihanta, and they will tell you that between the theory and lessons, it becomes personal. They start on a path that takes them towards a more principled, compassionate way of living, and it ricochets out into their families, friends, communities, and that is how a kinder world is built – one student, one person at a time.
