Canada Day: A Celebration of Unity, Identity, and New Beginnings

Every nation has a birthday. For Canada, that day is July 1, a day painted in red and white, filled with maple leaves, fireworks, music, and a lot of pride.

The History Behind the Celebration

On this day, the Constitution Act of 1867, which established the Dominion of Canada as a result of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and the Province of Canada joining together, was proclaimed. It was initially called Dominion Day, and later became Canada Day in 1982, the same year that Canada became fully independent in legislation from the British Parliament.

How Canada Celebrates

The celebration begins with hoisting Canadian flags to symbolize unity, diversity, and resilience, with its iconic 11-pointed red maple leaf standing tall. Communities throughout the country get together for parades, outdoor concerts, neighborhood barbecues, cultural shows, and the amazing fireworks displays that rock the summer night. The biggest parties in the country’s capital, Ottawa, gather citizens of all backgrounds to celebrate Canada’s multiculturalism.

A Special Connection: Maneesh Media

Canada Day means a lot to Maneesh Media. Through our 50 Under 50: Young and Aspiring Indo-Canadians book, launched in 2023 in Brampton, we celebrated the amazing achievements of the Indian community in Canada. From trailblazers like Benjamin Ben Watsa and Jonita Gandhi to visionary entrepreneur Amit Jain, these stories are a reminder that Canada’s greatest strength lies in the people who continue to shape its future.

Words of Inspiration

As we reflect on what it means to belong, we share with you an evergreen passage from Michael Ondaatje’s renowned Canadian film, The English Patient:

“We die, we die rich with lovers and tribes, tastes we have savoured, bodies we’ve entered and swum through like rivers, fears we’ve hidden in like this wretched cave. I want all of this marked on my body. We are the real countries—not the boundaries drawn on maps with the names of powerful men.”

On this Canada Day, let’s honour not only the country, but the people, cultures, aspirations and shared stories that make Canada so special.

Happy Canada Day from all of us at Maneesh Media!
