Padma Bhushan Recipient Jagdish Sheth to Retire After 35 Years at Goizueta

Respected academic and influential Indian-American luminary Jagdish Sheth will retire effective 31 August 2026, ending a 35-year tenure at Goizueta Business School that shaped marketing scholarship and mentored generations of students and faculty. A recipient of the 2020 Padma Bhushan for literature and education—one of India’s highest civilian honours—Sheth leaves behind a legacy of global thought leadership.

Sheth joined Emory in 1991 after holding academic positions at USC, Columbia, MIT, the University of Pittsburgh and the Indian Institute of Management, drawn by Atlanta’s rise as a global hub. In 1993 he founded the Center for Relationship Marketing, serving as its director until 2004 and helping build one of the nation’s top ten marketing departments. He has authored or edited 80 books and nearly 300 papers, with his work cited over 75,000 times, and was named to Stanford and Elsevier’s World’s Top 2% Scientists list in 2025.

Among his notable collaborations is his collaboration with John Howard at Columbia University to develop the Howard-Sheth Theory of Buyer Behaviour—a foundational text in consumer behaviour. He has taught at leading institutions across the United States and served as Chairman of the Board of Governors at the Jagdish Sheth School of Management (JAGSoM), Bengaluru. His academic and professional honours include lifetime achievement awards from the American Marketing Association, and he has served on or led nearly 70 doctoral dissertation committees.

Beyond campus, the Sheths’ family foundations support more than 60 non-profits focused on education, wellness and sustainability in the US and India.

Maneesh Media is incredibly honoured to have a long-standing association with Prof Sheth and it looks forward to chronicling his next chapter in life.
