Mr. Shah the Chairman of V-Trans (India) Limited, was born on September 29, 1950 in a Jain family who were into the traditional business of trading commodities and kirana shops. His father Mr. Kunverji K. Shah was a visionary who started Vijay Transport Co. in 1958. Looking back he feels he owes success to his father who taught him the value of making his own decisions and sticking to them and thus helping in nurturing the quality of independent thinking and decision making. Mr. Shah recalls that in his early childhood days he had to change more than 8 schools in his academic life but he has always stood first in all standards. As a kid Mr. Shah used to work as delivery clerk during the vacations and he learnt truck driving and soon he joined the family business in 1966.

What is amazing that on joining the business he got a hands-on experience by doing all the operational jobs including driving, loading, paying out & collecting, besides dealing with unhappy customers. Thanks to his analytical mind he wanted to know the entire process so that he can go after his top-most priority “Systematize and Streamline Business Operations”.

In a short span, he had mastered the business so thoroughly that the elders in his family thought it right to hand over the reins of the company in his able hands at a tender age of 27 in 1978. Once in the driver’s seat he began a restructuring process.

Once he was at the helm of affairs he realized that for years the business was suffering from improper accounting practices so he took a bold step of settling all accounts at one go. Thereafter the slate was made totally clean and from that time onwards the accounts have always been in order. Besides this, Mr. Shah began a process of transparency and customer orientation by emphasizing on punctuality. He always thought ahead of the time and realizing the importance of Systems and Information he himself first took a course to learn about software and soon several e-modules were introduced in the company. Realizing the importance of integration, in the mid-90s, the organization was streamlined from a group of various small legal entities into a single integrated corporation, and Mr. Shah was appointed its Chairman & his younger brother Mr. Mahendra Shah as the Managing Director.

It was not a smooth ride to success for Mr. Shah as globalization-triggered competition increased. Large corporate began looking for ways to cut their costs. Their primary target area was manufacturing and raw material procurement, through aggressive adoption of technology and streamlining logistics. “Just-In-Time” became the mantra.

The entry of multinationals in the logistics field and a change in customers mindset from using fragmented service providers to a single-window service provider called for change. It became essential for transport companies to become efficient, both in service and the cost. Process orientation became essential. It was a hard time as a large number of transport companies were unable to spot the trend and adapt accordingly.

But Mr. Shah knew how to tackle the situation he persuaded family stakeholders (as well as trusted old clients) to overcome their emotional attachment to the company’s legacy name and adopt a new corporate identity, strategy and structure for the company – that was re-articulated as a group comprising surface “hard” transport, express cargo and warehousing & logistics divisions. This decision taken by Mr. Shah was to be a turning point in the company’s rich and eventful growth story.

Preparing for the Road Ahead

For the coming decade, Mr. Shah wants to turn his focus back on operational efficiencies and overcoming shortage, scheduled runs, further sharpening service standards, minimizing turnaround time for each vehicle across the country, etc. In other words it is the mission-critical core competency of any transport and logistics enterprise. This is with a view to further strengthening and future-readying Group V’s operational efficiency for the imminent future and retaining its sectoral leadership and competitive edge, ahead of the curve.

In his 48 years as a transporter, Mr. Ashok Shah has been on the Committee of many social organizations, often elected to the post of trustee, President or Chairman because of his far reaching vision. For his leadership qualities, advocacy of technology and active participation he has been valued and appreciated by one and all for his contributions. In 1989 Ashok was elected as the Managing committee member of Matunga boarding and he was the trustee of KVO Sthanakvasi Jain Mahajan. He is also the past President of Bombay Goods Transport Association, (BGTA) the apex organization in the business of Transportation and is considered to be among the most successful President’s in the last 50 years. He is trustee at Shri Vardhaman Sthanakvasi Sangh, Chinchbunder and during his tenure as President of Rotary Club of Bombay Mandvi three projects had received District Level recognition. He is the Vice Chairman of Jain International Trade Organization (JITO) and program committee & past President of Kutch Corporate Forum.

Mr. Shah feels that entrepreneurship is an inherent quality of Gujarati’s and they are known for their risk taking abilities and business acumen. Recent improvements under the leadership of Mr. Narendra Modi have resulted in maintaining a sustainable economic growth for Gujarat. With the advent and increase in e-commerce business and increase in purchasing power of the people there is going to be tremendous simulation in the business opportunities in the State. In the next twenty years, Gujarat will be the most prominent & developed state in all fields including infrastructure, industrial growth, health & wellness, education and sports.

The main pillar of his on-going success is his close-knit family, which comprises of his wife, Rasilaben, his daughters, Poonam & Lopa and his twin sons, Vishal & Viral. Interestingly, the birth of his twin sons was the most memorable event in his life.
