Five Generations. One Woman. And a World in Lockdown

One became eight. Eight became more than twenty. And over five generations, a family grew across countries, continents and enterprises. Carrying an heirloom of traditions, values and enduring legacy. At its centre stood Kamlaben Shantilal Kansagra – Baa.

On paper, the assignment appeared straightforward: tell the life story of a remarkable woman. In practice, it raised a much larger question. How do you write about someone whose influence cannot be measured solely by what she accomplished, but by what others accomplished because of her? That question would shape the making of The Leading Lady – Into the Life of Kamlaben Shantilal Kansagra.  It was also a gift to a remarkable woman on her 100th birthday. But it became something far greater — a celebration of her life and a legacy for the generations she helped shape.

The Woman Was the Story

So Was Everyone After Her. A conventional biography moves chronologically. Childhood, marriage, family, milestones, achievements. But Baa’s story demanded another approach. Her life was inseparable from the generations that followed. The family had grown geographically, commercially and culturally, yet continued to share a common inheritance of values and relationships. The editorial challenge was to find that connecting thread. What had endured as the family expanded? Which principles had travelled across borders? How could the influence of one woman be understood through the lives of her descendants? This was not simply about documenting a family tree. It was about examining what held its branches together.

Then the World Closed

And just as the story was taking shape, COVID-19 arrived. Borders closed. Travel stopped. Families were separated by restrictions, uncertainty and distance. For a project involving a family spread across the world, the circumstances were particularly challenging. The usual assumptions about access, coordination and the production process could no longer be taken for granted. But the story could not wait for the world to return to normal. The team had to adapt its working methods and continue developing the book through the height of the pandemic.

An assignment about continuity was now being created during a period of extraordinary disruption. There was an irony in that.

The Book Behind the Book

Every finished coffee table book presents an apparently seamless experience. The photographs, words, design and chronology come together as though they were always meant to belong on the same pages. What readers do not see is the editorial thinking behind those decisions — the questions, connections, revisions and adjustments that give a narrative its shape. For Maneesh Media, The Leading Lady became a story about more than one extraordinary life. It was about five generations, the persistence of family identity across continents, and the determination to preserve that history even during a global pandemic. The finished book tells Baa’s story. The story behind it is about discovering how one woman’s life continued to speak through so many others.

Finding Shakti Beyond the Familiar

Navratri celebrates Shakti in her many manifestations — strength, courage, wisdom, protection and the power to sustain. In Baa’s story, these qualities took a distinctly human form. Her influence was not expressed through public office or institutional authority. It could be traced through the family she helped shape, the relationships that endured and the values carried forward by successive generations.
