Jewels of Punjab is a series of coffee-table books featuring the most influential Punjabis across the world. The first volume was released by the former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh and Air Chief Marshal BS Dhanoa; it covered 100 families from 19 countries and has travelled to 39 countries.
Following its success, the second volume in this series is a celebration of victory over struggles and over failures. A compilation of life’s odysseys of 75 families across 19 countries, it showcases how today’s reckoned names earned their reputation, starting out with almost nothing.
The book is a way to celebrate Shri Guru Nanak Dev ji‘s 550th birth anniversary.
As they say, all good things come in small packages. A similar situation exists in the case of the Indian state of Punjab. This book highlights the achievements of Punjabis in the country and outside, in their respective fields. Their tireless efforts have not only brought them some measure of prosperity and renown, but has made their adopted countries proud as well. These inspiring stories in the book will certainly change the lives of someone, somewhere.

Dr Amarjit Singh Marwah

One of the very first Indians to study in the USA, he today has a square to his name conferred by the Los Angeles City. As a dental surgeon, fixing the smiles of global glitterati, leaders and sportspersons, keeps him busy, but he still finds time to lend his support to the Sikh community in the US or host high-profile world leaders, the late Indira Gandhi, Indian PM, being one such person. A patron of the arts and culture, he has identified many monuments as heritage sites and has drawn the attention of concerned authorities for their restoration. Fifty years back, he gifted the Hollywood Gurudwara to the community.

Capt Amarinder Singh
Chief Minister of Punjab, INDIA
Serving a second tenure as the Chief Minister of Punjab, he is the son of the last Maharaja of the princely state of Patiala. He joined politics after serving in the Indian Army, from 1963 to 1966. An elected Member of the Legislative Assembly from Patiala, Capt Amrinder Singh was the president of Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee, the state division of the Indian National Congress and currently serves as the chairman of the Punjab Urdu Academy. Above all, he is the Chief Minister of Punjab.

His desire to attend school only arose because he wished to have the same kind of shirt his brother had worn to school. He didn’t know as a child that his education would make him a soldier and see action in World War II. Post-retirement, he moved to the USA, and started working again, at 70. Now 106, Major Bakhtawar Singh Brar is an active agriculturist with several thousands of acres of farmlands in America.

From Law to Engineering and politics to business, he has done it all. As Minister of State for Sport, Bal Gosal was the Minister responsible for Canada at the 2012 summer Olympics in London and led the Canadian delegation to the 2014 Sochi winter Olympics.

He was awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) in the 2015 New Year Honours for services to sport and charity.

He was a police officer in India but when the police released a criminal caught by him on bail, he decided to travel along a different path. His was a different journey. He travelled to 35 countries, doing different kinds of work and finally settled in Norway, a country that did not have a single Indian restaurant. He encashed on the zero competition and he ended up opening many restaurants.

His ancestral profession was into bricks and brick kilns. But her world was shattered once Karpal succumbed to injuries in a car crash. Ever since, she has been holding the reins of her late husband’s empire, wiping her tears off, bringing up the children. So well has she proved herself that the Malaysians now find him in her!

Serving his community is his nature. Once a farm labourer working at 1.35 cents an hour, he is now a leading farmer of Yuba City, California, with 5,000 acres of farms, and actively contributes to the needs of his community. Following the anti-Sikh riots of 1984 in India, he served as the vice president of the World Sikh Organisation which was formed to protect the interests of global Sikhs.

In 1992, he built a gurudwara in Kuwait, which is now visited by the locals. He ensures every Indian gets the required support when in Kuwait. Though, for one, he was brought down to zilch as the country was invaded and the entire Gulf trembled. He had to flee the country to save his family and himself. The hero went through Turkey, Iraq, Iran and Pakistan to reach the safety of his country. The invasion had destroyed everything, yet he got back to his karmabhoomi and grew his business to greater heights.

The 30th police commissioner of the Mumbai police, he is the second Sikh officer to head the capital city of Maharashtra and was the Chairman of 14 historical gurudwaras in India. We all salute him for playing a major role in restoring peace among various communities following the 1992–1993 Mumbai riots. He was conferred with the President’s police medal for distinguished service and the Indian police medal for meritorious service by the Indian President.
